The 18th Century Concert Orchestra makes a welcome return to Bath to perform Handel’s great celebratory masterpiece in the spine-tinglingly atmospheric Messiah By Candlelight.  As the festive season begins at the Theatre Royal Bath, this wonderful seasonal concert will be performed in full period costume on Sunday 9 December at 7.30pm.

Messiah by George Frideric Handel has remained a firm favourite among generations of concert-goers since it was first performed in Dublin in 1742.  One of Handel’s most popular works, this magnificent oratorio includes the ever-popular Hallelujah Chorus.

The scene is set by the dedicated Master of Candles, providing illumination before the musicians appear in their strikingly colourful costumes.  The 18th Century Concert Orchestra communicates the brilliance and drama of baroque music with period instruments, a chamber choir and 18th Century costumes as they perform by candlelight to achieve their authentic recreation of how the first performance of Handel’s Messiah looked and sounded. 

One of the country’s busiest music ensembles, the acclaimed 18th Century Concert Orchestra is also one of the finest exponents of baroque music in the country, delighting audiences with their colourful candlelit presentations of baroque classics.  Their unique brand of musicianship and extraordinary playing has gained them an audience of all ages throughout the UK and abroad. 

Since its foundation in 2001 the Orchestra has played in theatres, churches, stately homes and concert halls, across the UK and further afield, including a two-week tour of Canada.  Their work has earned them a National Lottery award and Arts Council England recognition, and a performance of Handel’s Messiah was filmed for the Channel 4 series Georgian Underworld. Their CD, Suite Delights, includes the recording of Handel’s Messiah for Channel 4’s Summer Seasons.rt Orchestra is also one of the finest exponents of baroque music in the country, delighting audiences with their colourful candlelit presentations of baroque classics.  Their unique brand of musicianship and extraordinary playing has gained them an audience of all ages throughout the UK and abroad.
