On Monday evening the students at Bath Academy of Musical Theatre were treated to an inspiring masterclass with West End and TV star Helena Blackman.

Helena trained at GSA and is best known following her appearance on the BBC1 show ‘How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria’. She has since performed in many West End and touring musicals including The Sound Of Music, South Pacific, Gypsy and The Wizard of Oz. She has worked with many of the biggest names in theatre – including Julia McKenzie, Ian McKellen and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Each of the BAMT students was given the opportunity to perform for and work with Helena on either a monologue or musical theatre song.

Helena was impressed with the quality of the performances by the students at Bath Academy of Musical Theatre, and how they positively responded to her feedback. “Tim, Rob and the other staff are doing a great job preparing students for their auditions. Their song choices were perfect for audition material.”

Head of Music Tim King said “The students really felt the benefits from working with such an inspiring actor and mentor – and learnt a great deal. With thousands of hopefuls applying to top drama schools, we have to provide our students at BAMT with the best one on one training and masterclasses from musical theatre specialists to give them a chance at succeeding.”

After the session, student Rochelle Oliver said “It was very a helpful and insightful masterclass. Helena backed up what our BAMT tutors have been teaching us over the year, and gave us some great advice.”

Whilst Sophie Tatum, another student, commented “It was really inspiring to have someone visit us who was in the same boat as us and is now such a success. She shared her experiences of drama school and lots of great audition tips – it was very useful seeing where we could all possibly be in the years to come, and it has given me even more drive to succeed after meeting her.”

Founded by Rob Hickmore and Tim King, Bath Academy of Musical Theatre is now in its second year offering the best musical theatre training in the area. The course focusses on audition preparation and is a must for anyone wishing to gain entry to full time drama school and musical theatre courses.

Due to Rob and Tim’s connections with the West End and top drama schools, students at Bath Academy of Musical Theatre are regularly treated to masterclasses with highly experience performers and directors, such as Mary Hammond (Royal Academy of Music), David Ashley (Cats, Blood Brothers), Helen Colby (Sweeney Todd and Sister Act) and Neil Ditt (Mary Poppins and High Society).

BAMT staff are all professionals from the musical theatre world in both performance and teaching. Their previous students have gained places at institutions including GSA, Mountview, Royal Academy of Music and Bristol Old Vic.

Bath Academy of Musical Theatre will be offering a Free Taster Session on Monday 8th April to anyone interested in attending the course. The evening will include practical workshops in singing, dance and acting – and is an ideal opportunity to meet the staff. This event will be followed by the first set of auditions on 29th April for entry in September 2013.
