‘Inspiration’ – a title that conveys drama, effervescence and looking back to one’s past along with a keen eye on the future. This title acts as a personification of Bath Theatre School as it took a trip down memory lane to its previous shows, exam pieces and favourite material.
Since opening in 2012, the School has put itself on the map and is now justly proud to celebrate their achievements to date.
The show’s compère Greg Jones quickly generated a rapport with the packed audience and fluidly introduced the evening with great comedy, integration and energy. There was a good balance of all three musical theatre disciplines throughout and it was pleasant to see solos amongst so many of the children, with no leading lady or man. All children were frequently used on stage and costume changes for each must have reached double figures. Aged from just 7 to 18, the enjoyment of the children and the ‘inspiring’ relationship they have with the teachers was very apparent.
In addition to the chosen musical theatre repertoire, the songs written by one of the founders Adrian Millard, were very moving and excellently executed. A nice touch was the cameo inclusion of the teachers who showcased their talents, which enforced the ‘inspirational’ theme and added to the wonderful highlights, without taking the limelight from the children.
Mention must be made to the stand out numbers of the show; the ‘Mary Poppins’ tribute was energetic and well choreographed with great character adoption. ‘They Live in You’ was beautifully danced and created a great atmosphere. The film sketch, cleverly written by the drama teacher Mark Hale was witty and well delivered.
The enjoyment of the children was apparent throughout and all pieces were well chosen to showcase the School. Bath Theatre School should be congratulated for an evidently successful five years and what is clearly a very exciting future!
‘Inspiration’ runs until Saturday 18th Feb.
