For over ten years Bath Opera has delighted audiences around the West Country with its smaller scale touring productions and this year will be no exception with a very exciting and fresh production of Bizet’s masterpiece, ‘Carmen’. The edgy central character of Carmen, always skirting the conventions of society – flirting both with danger and with the celebrities of the day – is an ideal candidate to be transported into modern, cash-strapped Spain……away from the bullring and into the football stadium.
Bath Opera are very excited to announce their multi-national cast for the production which introduces new singers as well as some familiar faces. Rupert Drury returns to sing Don Jose, with Hannah Lockwood singing the role of his childhood sweetheart Micaela. The gypsy girls, Mercedes and Frasquita, are sung by Judy Davis and American-born newcomer Jessica Hemley respectively. The star of the show herself – Carmen will be sung by Australian soprano Sophie Yelland.
In these intimate scale productions you will feel as if you are part of the action, as Carmen’s world of headstrong passion is played out to its tragic conclusion through music of enduring strength and beauty. Directed by Jane Clark and accompanied at the piano by Bath Opera’s resident Musical Director, Peter Blackwood, it promises to be a memorable production which will leave stunned and astonished.
There will be only two performances in Bath, both at the Rondo, Larkhall on Friday and Saturday June 29th and 30th and tickets are available from Bath Festivals Box Office, Abbey Churchyard, Bath . 01225-463362.
