Next Stage Theatre Company presents

Top Girls by Caryl Churchill

Marlene, the new Managing Director of “Top Girls” employment agency, toasts a bizarre collection of friends at her celebratory dinner party:

“We’ve all come a long way. To our courage and the way we changed our lives and our extraordinary achievements.”

In the play’s madcap opening scene, the guests at the party – a series of extraordinary women from history and art – describe how they have overcome the power of men in an attempt to achieve their dreams.

However, the year is 1981, and before long the fantastical dinner party is swept away and the story unfolds of Marlene’s own tricky climb to be one of the “Top Girls”. The straight-talking world of working women in the 1980’s is laid bare and the plot becomes an intriguing and shocking social drama, revealing exactly who and what has been sacrificed for Marlene’s success.

Top Girls addresses the competing themes of ambition, feminism and solidarity, to expose the selfishness of its vibrant characters. It is, however, an ultimately redeeming portrayal of trust in humanity, of burdens and challenges shared, and of determination and loyalty in an unfair world.

Horrifying, funny and inspiring by turns, this renowned play by one of Britain’s greatest living playwrights has language that will shock and a sting in its tail. Boasting an all female cast, this fast-paced, unflinching production of Top Girls promises an evening of theatre to keep you talking all the way home.

“The best British play ever by a woman dramatist.” (Guardian, 1982)

Novato Theatre Company’s

Novato Theatre Company make their debut performance at The Mission Theatre with their devised piece Awaken. This new and dynamic company is bursting with energy and style, ready to showcase their original ideas in a creative explosion of mythological madness.

Awaken begins by exploring Plato’s concept of the soulmate, drawing upon ancient mythology. Cupid and Psyche are cruelly torn apart by the almighty Jupiter, King of the Gods, who feels threatened by the growing strength of mankind. Psyche must undergo a series of gruelling tasks, set out by Cupid’s mother Venus, in order to prove her love. As the piece unfolds Psyche and Cupid’s relationship is challenged by the complications between the mortal world and the Gods. Cupid and Psyche’s son, half mortal, half God, delves into a world of story books brought to life by his imagination in order to escape the chaos of his feuding parents.

Novato Theatre Company was founded in 2012 after the success of their sister company, Novato Dance. Their performances are entirely devised and explore a range of theatre styles including physical and post-modernism with a bit of comedy thrown in for good measure.
