The Ustinov Studio is proud to announce that it has just received two nominations for prestigious national theatre awards. Simon Scardifield has been nominated for the Theatre Awards UK Best Performance in a Play, for The Double in the Ustinov’s Autumn 2012 season. The role of Goliadkin saw Simon performing opposite a life-size puppet of himself in Dostoyesvsky’s play about an office clerk who wakes up one morning faced with a doppelganger which seems intent on causing havoc and ruining the real Goliadkin’s reputation.
“Simon Scardifield roars with energy throughout and delivers a wonderfully layered performance of panic, chaos and terror, yet is equally powerful in the more vunerable moments” The Public Reviews
“Simon Scardifield is magnificent. The image of him drunkenly dancing with the lifesize Double is a moving and as densely communicative as poetry” Observer
The UK Theatre Awards, formerly known as the TMA Awards, recognise the work of professional touring and regionally produced productions. The winners will be announced on October 20th.
Also the Ustinov itself was nominated in the Peter Brook…Empty Space Awards, which recognise outstanding work in small-scale producing and studio theatres, for the second consecutive year. The winners of both awards will be announced later in the year.
The Empty Space…Peter Brook Awards are presented each year by London Theatre Reviews, The Drama and Performance department of the V&A Museum and the National Theatre Studio. Last year, Laurence Boswell’s themed seasons of in-house productions in the Ustinov Studio narrowly missed out last year to London’s Finborough Studio, having been described by Daily Telegraph’s Dominic Cavendish as “a constantly bubbling fount of marvels“. The winner’s of this year’s awards will be announced on the 5th November.
