Following their sold out Sixties musical ‘A Slice of Saturday Night’, Bath’s award-winning Encore Northenders Theatre Company are once again putting finishing touches to another musical comedy set to tug at heartstrings and leave audience jaws aching.
The popular off-Broadway musical ‘I Love You Because’ has rarely been performed in the South West – surprising as the basis for the show’s laugh-out-loud storyline has local ties, explains Director Mark Sellick: “When Jane Austin wrote ‘Pride and Prejudice’ she couldn’t have imagined how many different adaptations would follow. When ‘I Love You Because’ was penned, the writers made no secret of how they took Austin’s classic novel as their starting point, bringing her classic relationship and self-learning themes back to life in a modern world of one night stands and dating websites.”
‘I Love You Because’ centres around Austin Bennett, an uptight New Yorker who discovers his long-term girlfriend Catherine has been cheating on him. Thrown back into the dating world with only his misguided brother to lead him, Austin meets free-spirited Marcy Fitzwilliams, the opposite of everything he wants – or so he believes. Both fresh out of relationships, and certainly not what you’d term a conventional match, they follow the well-meaning advice of their eccentric friends and siblings and begin their rocky road to acceptance and love one mistake at a time. After all, no one’s perfect.
“Imagine the TV sitcom ‘Friends’ mixed with the musical ‘Avenue Q’ and you won’t be far off” says Mark Sellick. “A number of the production team have been involved in past productions of ‘I Love You Because’ and it’s a real audience favourite. Our talented cast and fantastic live band can’t wait to raise the curtain on a successful run!”
Performances from 10 – 13 September at Batheaston Church Hall.
