Thursday 28th September to Saturday 7th October 2017
Town Hall Arts, Trowbridge Library and Collaborative Schools Ltd are working together to bring a new Festival to Trowbridge this autumn! Trowbridge BookFest is a ten-day festival of books, literature and the arts. From author talks, to performances and children’s activities Trowbridge BookFest is designed for the whole community to excite and energise the imagination and re-awaken interest in the power of words. Thanks to funding from Awards for All most of the events are absolutely free!
Jayne Bullock from Collaborative Schools Ltd said:
“One of the main aims of Trowbridge BookFest is to help make the exciting world of reading and books easily available to all. It’s great that Awards for All has supported the Festival because it means we’ve been able to put on a varied programme of new and exciting talks and events with really inspiring authors and artists.”
Launching on Thursday 28th September the Festival will celebrate National Poetry Day where primary schools will take part in creative writing and visual art workshops, whilst members of the public are invited to drop in, meet and work with poet Dawn Gorman to play with words and text to make poems on the theme of Freedom.
Throughout the week Trowbridge Schools will meet inspirational, internationally published authors. In partnership with Bath Children’s Literature Festival primary schools will be treated to a superstar visit by author and ex-Pussycat Doll, Kimberley Wyatt, enthusing young readers with her book, ‘World Elite Dance Academy’. Wiltshire based Young Adult author, Chris Vick, will lead creative writing workshops in all three secondary schools. Chris, who is published by HarperCollins in the UK, is the author of ‘Kook’ and ‘Storms’ books for Young Adults.
‘I’m obsessed with the sea; the beauty, the danger, the un-knowable nature of the ocean. It’s why I work in conservation. It’s why I surf. It’s what I write about. I also write about what it’s like to be young, in trouble and out of your depth’.
If you write, are thinking about writing, or are simply curious about how all the words in your favourite books actually get there, then you will love Chris’s author talk at Town Hall Arts on 3rd October. Chris will also inspire a young audience in his Creative Workshop at Trowbridge Library on 5th October in a supportive, and practical workshop for young people who want to write.
Tracy Hager, Trowbridge Library said
‘Chris will be amazing – we are very lucky to have him come to Trowbridge. He is one of a new generation of writers putting young male characters and relationships at the heart of his books. He’s a fantastic role model and inspiration to all.’
Town Hall Arts will host a free talk by television journalist turned Junior Doctor, Rachel Clarke. Her new book ‘Your Life in My Hands’, captures the extraordinary realities of life on the NHS frontline.
Bath based author Rachel Ward, author of ‘The Cost of Living: An Ant and Bea Mystery’ will give a free talk at Trowbridge Library. The novel is the first in a series and focuses on Bea Jordan, a smart but unfulfilled checkout girl and her unlikely ally Ant, the seemingly gormless new trainee.
There will be plenty going on for younger audiences too. On both Festival Saturdays enjoy Storytime at Trowbridge Library for free. In between times, Bedtime Stories on 5th October is a special event for little ones aged 3+ and do keep a keen eye out for the Gruffalo, as he will be in town between 28th and 30th September!
Refresh your bookshelves with the Trowbridge Book Fest second hand book exchange. Drop off books you no longer want so that they can inspire other readers, or fill your shelves with new stories.
