Bath-born Gabrielle Aplin’s cover of the 1984 classic ‘The Power of Love’ has been chosen to be used in the 2012 John Lewis Christmas TV advertising campaign.
A tender and haunting reworking of the Frankie Goes To Hollywood chart topping original, Gabrielle Aplin’s version of this Christmas classic is out now (on Parlophone Records). The track, which is the soundtrack to the hotly awaited and annually acclaimed John Lewis Christmas television ad, made its debut on Friday 9 November on Channel 4.
Asked to record the song by John Lewis, Gabrielle was initially hesitant that she could bring her own alchemy to a track which is already quite perfect. She explains, “… The lyrics are so strong and powerful, but the song is so intricate and beautiful – I was fascinated with the juxtaposition of it. What I really wanted to do was strip the production away, but keep the energy of the song. And I wanted it to be minimal and wintry. ”
Originally recorded for John Lewis during a session with David Kosten (Bat For Lashes, Everything Everything), the single version was subsequently co-produced by Gabrielle’s current album producer and collaborator Mike Spencer (Emeli Sande, Alex Clare). By coincidence, the single entered the Official UK Top 40 Singles Chart yesterday (on 24hrs download sales alone), almost 28 years to the day after the song’s original release on 19 November 1984.
With in excess of an incredible 13 million YouTube views on videos made for her previous 3 EPs already, including over 2.5 million on her track ‘Home’, Gabrielle’s debut album is scheduled for release in Spring 2013, preceded by a brand new single “Please Don’t Say You Love Me” on 10 February 2013.
