DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET HEADS TO LARKHALL
Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street by Stephen Sondheim
RONDO THEATRE, Wednesday 10th – Saturday 13th September
Midsomer Norton-based theatre company, Merriman Productions, return to the Rondo Theatre in Bath next month with their new production of Sweeney Todd, Stephen Sondheim’s musical adaptation of the legend of the bloodthirsty barber.
Packed with Sondheim’s characteristic wit and dark humour, Sweeney Todd is a heart-poundingly entertaining musical thriller about a man driven mad by injustice. When Sweeney Todd returns to London from a prison sentence spent in Australia, he seeks revenge on the Judge who falsely sentenced him, and has since stolen Sweeney’s daughter Johanna. Assisted by the wickedly manipulating baker, Mrs Lovett, the pair allow nothing and no-one to stand in the way of their murderous aim, but there is one mysterious figure who seems to have noticed something strange in Mrs. Lovett’s exceedingly popular pies…
Widely acknowledged as Sondheim’s musical masterpiece, it is a razor-sharp tale of vengenace and true love, featuring some of the finest music ever written for the theatre.
Merriman Productions is the adult production company associated with the award-winning Merriman Theatre Group, working with children and young adults in Midsomer Norton. They return to the Rondo after 2012’s hilarious farce Lucky Stiff, with a cast made up of Merriman regulars, plus guests from other local amateur societies including Bath G&S, ProAct Theatre Company in Bristol, Chipping Sodbury’s award-winning Sodbury Players, original musical theatre company Music Is Life Productions and Wootton Bassett Light Opera Society, amongst others.
Director Graeme Savage says “Many people will know Sweeney as a huge, epic musical, and of course, the film version with Johnny Depp – not something you would expect to see in the intimate surrounds of the Rondo. But by stripping it right back, we’ve managed to get through to some of the black comedy and bring out a lot more of the humour that sometimes gets lost in the bigger productions. And there are still some wonderful harmonies and chillingly gothic moments too!”
SWEENEY TODD is at the Rondo Theatre, Bath from Wednesday 10th – Saturday 13th September. Performances are each evening at 7.30pm. Tickets priced at £10 (£8 discounts) are available now from Bath Box Office on 01225 463362, or online via www.merrimantheatre.com
