by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth
Rondo Theatre, 21 – 24 September.
Two award-winning local theatre companies are joining forces to open the Rondo Theatre’s Autumn Season with a brand new production of Stephen Sondheim’s groundbreaking musical, COMPANY.
On the night of his 35th birthday, Robert struggles to think of a wish as he blows out his candles. The only bachelor in his social circle, his well-meaning if crazy married friends share their pros, cons and somewhat unconventional marriage advice with him, over increasingly hilarious dinner parties, first dates and awkward conversations. But ultimately it’s Robert’s decision – be happy with his lot or wish for something more…
Now almost 50 years old, COMPANY remains an incredibly relevant. mature, intelligent and wildly funny look at relationships, friendships and ‘being alive’.
Midsomer Norton-based Merriman Productions (the adult performance company for Merriman Theatre Group) and Bristol’s ProAct Theatre Company have both forged a reputation in recent years for acclaimed smaller scale versions of larger musicals and plays. Merriman’s Sweeney Todd and Acorn Antiques have sold out the Rondo, before being nominated for Best Comedy and Best Musical in the NODA South West Awards, and they produced the regional amateur premier of One Man Two Guvnorsat Somervale School earlier this year. ProAct’s recent productions of the musical I Love You Becauseand powerful drama Extremities at Clifton’s Alma Tavern Theatre both received several Rose Bowl nominations, with Emma Griffiths (who also stars as Sarah in Company) winning the Rose Bowl Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
This production of Sondheim’s masterpiece sees the two companies combining their producing talents for the first time, bringing a cast of some of the best amateur performers in the South West to Bath. More than half of the cast have been nominated or won Rose Bowl Awards for their previous performances, and the show is directed by Rose Bowl winner Steve Blackmore, who has more than twenty years experience of directing musical theatre in and around Bristol. Amongst the cast are regular performers with Bath Light Operatic Group, Bath Operatic and Dramatic Society, Bristol Light Opera Company, Bristol Musical Comedy Club, Bristol Amateur Operatic Society, Sodbury Players and Exit Stage Left.
