The Merry Opera Company presents:

Kiss me, Figaro!

a new romcom backstage at the opera

with classic music by Mozart, Handel, Puccini, Irving Berlin and more

Written and directed by John Ramster

Music Director: Stephen Hose

Merry Opera return to The Rondo Theatre on Saturday 1 February at 8pm with the premiere of a newly commissioned romantic comedy, Kiss me, Figaro!. The show is set backstage and tells the tale of life (and love) with a touring opera company.

It is written and directed by John Ramster, whose staged Messiah for the company has toured to standing ovations since 2011 and who has just returned from directing Le nozze di Figaro in Finland.

The show draws on a wide range of operatic favourites, together with some more unusual repertoire and 20th century jazz standards with new translations and bespoke arrangements. The commission aims to play to the strengths of a chamber opera company such as Merry Opera working with early career singers and allowing audiences to enjoy familiar arias whilst exploring new ideas. It seeks to make opera fun for everyone and also to encourage those new to opera to ‘try it out’.

Director John Ramster has an international career directing in the UK, Ireland, Finland, Portugal, Spain and Serbia as well the UK. He is a professor of acting at the Royal Academy of Music, a sometime screenwriter for soap operas, a published author (Ladies’ Man has been translated into 7 languages) and his next book will be a murder-mystery set in Handel’s London.

Music Director and Conductor Stephen Hose has been Music Director for The Merry Opera’s last three tours and their ongoing staged Messiah.  He is also Music Director for OperaUK and recently worked as an accompanist for BBC 2’s The Choir with Gareth Malone.
