A group of children from Bath Theatre School had the lucky opportunity to meet a professional performer last Saturday. Vinny Coyle, who is currently rehearsing for the UK tour of Hairspray, taught the children about vocal, dance and acting technique whilst also giving them an up to date taste of life as a professional performer. The children were put through their passes with ‘You Can’t Stop the Beat’ from Hairspray and a dance routine from High School Musical which Vinny performed at Disneyland Paris. Children were also given the chance to ask questions about Hairspray and Vinny’s experience of playing Bugsy Malone in the West End, winning the Rising Stars talent competition earlier this year and his involvement with National Youth Theatre. Bath Theatre School’s principal, Tom Bright, added “we are thrilled that Vinny was able to share his experience and passion for performing with our students whom in a few years could be aspiring to follow in his footsteps. This is just part of our extensive syllabus which it intended to stretch and develop our students, whilst offering them fun and unique experiences which they will take with them forever.”
Master classes are just one of the many opportunities available to all students at Bath Theatre School, which prides itself on offering the most comprehensive and unique Musical Theatre experience for children aged 7-16 in Bath and surrounding areas. Bath Theatre School also gives children the opportunity to take Trinity examinations in Musical Theatre as part of their standard teaching. These nationally recognised qualifications not only build a foundation for a career in the performing, but the syllabus is purposely designed to build key life skills which are relevant to all children, in areas such as team work, communication, public speaking and co-ordination. Lessons are equally distributed between dancing, singing and acting so that children can learn all aspects of musical theatre to ensure they become all round performers.
Next year Bath Theatre School will be performing ‘Honk!’ the musical which is a unique and lively twist on the Ugly Duckling story, suitable for adults and children alike. The production will give students the chance to wear costumes, use makeup and perform in a professionally staged production for family and friends to see.
In addition, the School runs a Theatre Club for children to see firsthand what performing in a large-scale professional theatre is like. But most importantly Bath Theatre School provides a fun, friendly and safe CRB checked learning environment in which children can socialise, build confidence and make friends.
The School runs on Saturday mornings from 9.30 until 12.30 at Beechen Cliff School in Bath. Any children that interested in joining can enjoy a FREE 3 hour taster session to try it for themselves and meet the friendly staff.
