NODA South West has today announced the nominees for the NODA South West Annual Awards, recognising outstanding achievements in the world of amateur theatre throughout 2014. Over 70 different amateur theatre companies, producing everything from village hall pantomimes to blockbuster musicals, Ayckbourn plays to full-scale opera, have been recognised in this year’s line up, and feature companies from Cornwall to Gloucester to Bournemouth and everywhere in between.

With the South West divided up into 15 regions, incorporating over 300 societies, many performing several times a year, the NODA affiliated societies have produced well over 1000 productions in 2014, and the awards evening reflects the variety and quality of all involved. Awards include the highly coveted Best Musical Production alongside Best Drama, Best Comedy, Best G&S Production and Best Opera, but also acknowledge behind-the-scenes work with categories including Best Stage Decor, the Award for Visual Excellence, the Stage Electrics Award for Technical Achievement, Outstanding Choreography and Most Innovative Production. Young performers are also recognised in the Best Youth Production. One society from each of the 15 ‘districts’ will also receive the Outstanding Achievement Award, in recognition of having made exceptional progress over the last twelve months, or for a particularly outstanding production.

The NODA South West Councillor, Nick Lawrence, says “This is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the hard work and hours of commitment and dedication which these companies put in to not only developing their own skills, but also in entertaining their local communities. While many of the awards are about excellence in particular fields such as musicals, drama, comedy, pantomime, etc., this is also a chance to recognise improvement, development and achievement. We understand that, especially in these harsh financial times, just getting a production onto the stage takes a huge amount of dedication and team work, and we congratulate every single society and NODA member for their efforts in the last year.”

The winners will be announced at the Annual Awards Dinner, which this year is being held at the Marriott Hotel in Bristol on Saturday 28th February, sponsored by Bristol-based company Enlightened Lighting, after previous sell-out events in Torquay, Cheltenham and St. Mellion.

Nick adds “Since taking the opportunity to move the Awards Dinner around the region four years ago, we have been delighted at the response, with 300 people joining us in Cornwall last year. Of course there is a friendly competitive edge to the evening, but we’re also very proud of the way these events have encouraged groups to support other societies, forging friendships and working partnerships with societies which they may never otherwise have had much to do with, and this can only keep the amateur theatre community thriving and growing stronger”.

As well as presenting the annual awards, NODA, the National Operatic and Dramatic Association, provides support to its member societies in all aspects of amateur theatre. The regional representatives offer reports on performances, but can also offer guidance through licensing, child protection, health & safety and many legal aspects of running theatre companies on any scale. They also offer workshops and training sessions throughout the year. For more information on NODA and the services provided, visit www.noda.org.uk
