How Bath Abbey’s Bells define a parish – a fascinating sound installation at American Museum

How do church bells define a Parish?  ICIA, University of Bath present a sound installation created by Liminal who explore this using Bath Abbey’s bells.  The unique installation is free to visit and will be on show in The Stables, The American Museum, Bath from 5th-12th April.

The iconic Bath Abbey and its place in the geography and community of Bath is central to this powerful work which explores how the bells define the territory of a parish. The final installation was created from a sound workshop with members of the public and students from both of Bath’s Universities, which took place in March. Starting from Bath Abbey, eight recordists stood back to back, facing the direction of the four compass points, and then walked slowly along roads and paths that lead most directly North, South, East and West until they were no longer audible. The subsequent presentation of these four recordings in a single space will collapse the acoustic territory of the parish into a single listening space.

Liminal is a partnership between architect Frances Crow and sound artist and composer David Prior. Our work focuses on exploring the relationship between sound, listening and the environment. It encompasses site-specific interventions and sound walks, gallery installations, performances, research and consultancy as well as sound and music environments for exhibitions.

The installation runs from Sat 5 April – Sat 12 April 12-4pm (except 10 Apr 12pm-1pm) and admission is free.

There will also be a special preview event on Fri 4 April 4pm-6pm to launch the installation. Admission is free but places are limited so advance booking recommended. Book online www.bath.ac.uk/icia or phone 01225 386777
