This short piece from Onset Productions is all about letters to one’s younger self – though not the usual looking back in old age ‘if only I knew then what I know now’ stuff. This is done in the form of letters from young-ish people to their even younger, sometimes as little as five years younger, selves. The cast of three are in jolly children’s pyjama costumes and leap in and out of various characters at various ages (max 37) from babyhood on, in a set that is a visually engaging movable array of painted cardboard boxes (which seems to be a thing at Burdall’s at the moment). The advice from the young to the even younger has a tendency to follow the familiar “be yourself, follow your dream” line, but there is darker stuff as well; sex, abortions, childhood abandonment. This imaginative show is of necessity a bit formless, with no clear narrative line, but its sparky cast make sure it is never less than entertaining.
