NEIL McFARLANE – SIGHTSEEING WITH A HANGOVER
THE RING O’BELLS

This preview show from Neil McFarlane has had some serious preparation; ie he’s written a full script for it. But he only finished it this morning, and hopes, as he says, to have learnt it by the time of its first proper gig in one week’s time. So this is a sort of public dress rehearsal with script in hand. As the title suggests, it is a series of anecdotal tales culled from his experiences of doing low-rent comedy gigs in various odd places overseas; what, if anything, he saw of the places he played; who he met; and mainly how much he drank and what the deleterious effects of that were. He is Glaswegian, after all. Does this work as a show? Yes, even with the distraction of the fumbling with the script, these are interesting and varied tales of seedy gigs, in seedy places, run by various seedy characters. And feature his huge capacity for after – (and sometimes during-) gig drinking, contrasted with his total lack of capacity to handle it. This all vividly put over with a sparky self-effacing wit which cannot possibly fail to please an Edinburgh audience. A Glaswegian who can’t hold his drink! How can that not be funny?
