Rehearsed Reading of Ashman, a new play by Ryan Mellish and Doug Murdoch.

The intimate and relaxed atmosphere of this room upstairs at the Curfew provided the ideal setting for this first glimpse of a play all about the torment of playwright and lyricist Howard Ashman, the man responsible for classic cult musical Little Shop of Horrors and perennial Disney favourites The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast.

Set during the Aids epidemic of the 80’s, this hour long extract exposes us to the strong and influential characters in his life; Studio bosses, a manic mother and above all the love of his life and partner Bill Lauch. We are also treated to some of the musical interludes that helped make the man a household name.

Daniel Lewis-Jones, the producer of this first outing has promised that it will be back with all the glory of a fully fledged performance and I for one can’t wait to see more.
