THE INTERLINEAR OF CABEZA DE VACA, AND MALINCHE
This extraordinary production from Thereby Hangs a Tale company is essentially a pair of solo dramatic monologues, adapted from two pieces written in the 1930s by an American poet, Haniel Long. It concerns true events from the Spanish conquest of Mexico in the 16th century. If that sounds a bit heavy, well, in many ways it is; but the performances by Magdalena Ruiz and Tom Morris, with occasional atmospheric accompaniment from Gavin Irvine on double bass, make the stories mesmerising. Powerful, poetic, passionate, they evoke the tragedy and horror of those times, and in many ways their relevance to our own times, in beautifully delivered prose, accentuated spellbindingly in Ruiz’s case by the expressive fluid movements of the trained dancer she is. This show packs an immense amount into its just 50 minutes. A unique piece of theatrical art.
