SAINT PETERSBURG CLASSIC BALLET accompanied by a live orchestra visits the Theatre Royal Bath to perform two of Tchaikovsky’s stunning full-scale ballets, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, from Tuesday 26th January to Saturday 30th January.
Under the direction of former Prima Ballerina, Marina Medvetskaya, Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet has won plaudits across Russia, Scandinavia and the United States. UK audiences now have the opportunity to experience the superb artistry of this acclaimed company on its first British tour.
Filled with drama and exquisite choreography, Swan Lake is an epic love story and Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece. When dashing Prince Siegfried falls in love with Odette, the beautiful Queen of the Swans, the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart uses his magic to thwart their happiness, but they would rather die together than live apart. Accompanied by Tchaikovsky’s haunting and instantly recognisable score, Swan Lake is one of the world’s most evocative and beautiful ballets.
The Nutcracker is the enchanting story of Clara’s fantastical adventure with her Nutcracker Prince, the Mouse King and the delightful Sugar Plum Fairy. The perfect introduction to ballet, this eternal seasonal favourite, brimming with much-loved melodies, transports audiences to a magical world of make-believe, including a visit to the delicious Land of Sweets.
Tchaikovsky’s ‘big story ballets’ are the essence of Russian culture – composed, choreographed and premiered in Russia and combining virtuosity, technique, narrative and live music to create the ultimate dance experience. The wonderful spectacle of a large company of skilled dancers, gorgeous costumes and magnificent staging combine to make a truly magical performance.
Artistic Director Marina Medvetskaya said, “It has been a dream of mine to bring this company to audiences in the UK. We have enjoyed wonderful reviews from America, Northern and Eastern Europe and I believe UK dance fans will embrace the beauty, power and dexterity of our male and female dancers in these iconic ballets.”
Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet was formed in 1996 by Marina Medvetskaya, a disciple of Vakhtang Chaboukiana and former Prima Ballerina of the Tbilisi State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre. Mrs Medvetskaya starred in a host of ballet productions in Tbilisi, including Swan Lake, and has worked with world famous directors including Alexander Plesetsky and Mikhail Lavrovsky, on his production of Porgy and Bess.
The company began touring in Russia and the former states of the Soviet Union, quickly followed by its first international tour in Scandinavia. Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet was awarded the Gold Medal in the “Amber Necklace” International Ballet Competition in Kaliningrad in 1999. The company first performed in North America in 2003, and recently toured in Europe and the USA prior to their first UK tour in 2015/2016.
Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet is actively encouraging a new generation of ballet-going youngsters by offering a half-price ticket rate for children attending with an adult, for all performances of Swan Lake and the majority of the performances of The Nutcracker, subject to availability.
