American Season 2014
THE BIG MEAL by Dan LeFranc
Directed by Michael Boyd
The Ustinov Studio’s American Season 2014 begins next month with the UK premiere of Dan LeFranc’s award-winning family drama, The Big Meal, starring Diana Quick. This new season of three UK premieres follows two previous highly acclaimed seasons of work from the United States, which have proved huge hits with both critics and audiences.
Deeply comic and genuinely touching, The Big Meal is about love, marriage, raising children and the general onslaught of life, in which you turn around and find that youth has vanished and taken with it a lot of your dearest held assumptions about the way things would turn out.
Somewhere in America, in a typical suburban restaurant on a typical night, Sam and Nicole first meet. Sparks fly, and so begins an exhilarating story that takes five generations of a modern family on a rollercoaster ride through life, from first kiss to final goodbye. A stunning, big-hearted play that whizzes through nearly eighty years, this is the extraordinary story of an ordinary family.
The Big Meal is directed by Michael Boyd, the Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company from 2002 – 2012. This is the first play he has directed since leaving the RSC. The cast includes Diana Quick, who returns to the Ustinov after receiving rave reviews in last year’s The American Plan. She has worked extensively in film, theatre and television, her credits including Brideshead Revisited and You Never Can Tell in the Theatre Royal Bath’s 2005 Peter Hall Season. Playwright Dan LeFranc was the winner of the 2010 New York Times Outstanding Playwright Award.
THE BIG MEAL is at the Ustinov Studio from Thursday 6th March – Saturday 5th April. Tickets are on sale now from the Theatre Royal Bath Box Office on 01225 448844, or online at www.theatreroyal.org.uk/
The American Season 2014 continues through the Spring with Keith Huff’s gritty two-hander, A Steady Rain, directed by David Grindley (9th April – 10th May), and Lynn Nottage’s multi-award-winning Intimate Apparel, directed by the Ustinov Studio’s Artistic Director Laurence Boswell (29th May – 28th June).
Last year, all three of the plays in the Ustinov’s American Season – The American Plan, 4000 Miles andFifty Words – went on to enjoy London runs after their Bath premieres.
