Bleak House by Charles Dickens adapted by David Glass Ensemble
Thursday 14 – Saturday 16 September 2017
University Theatre, Bath Spa University
In November 2015 David Glass directed a thrilling version of Dicken’s Bleak House. Visual, physical and provocative it was an immediate hit leading to standing ovations each night at the Arts University Bournemouth. Legendary theatre director Mike Alfreds described it as “a dazzling and powerful production. A truly modern melodrama”.
Now to launch its national tour Bath Spa Live host the David Glass Ensemble in a co production with OnSet, Bath Spa University, in a stunning production for 4 performances only at The University Theatre from 14th until Saturday 16th September.
The evening begins with an outrageous Immersive Experience, recreating the dark and dismal world of the lower orders of Victorian London during which the cast will cook Victorian Street Food for the delectation of the audience. Pick pockets, rowdy drunks, prostitution, con artists and other features from Victorian England.
Then we witness the full performance of Bleak House, a powerful and gothic retelling of the Dickens’ novel- the eleventh most read book in the English language. Esther Summerson’s search for family and identity set against a brutal legal system hell bent on destroying those beneath it. The themes of Love, Power and Choice ring loudly at this time of social upheaval
This is a theatrical delight from one of this country’s greatest exponents of physical ensemble theatre.
