The Jolenes

London’s favourite all-girl bluegrass band, the fabulous Jolenes, with their tight mountain harmonies and hair styles evoke an era of chrome-fendered Chevrolet coupes, growling Pontiac dragsters, vintage glamour and taboo foundation garments. Throw in a mixture of spicy bluegrass, down-home country, with a dash of red-hot rockabilly stirred in for good measure – and those signature red frocks – and you have The Jolenes.

The girls sing in the time-honoured fashion of vintage bluegrass artists, all gathered round a single microphone to bring you songs of love, hate, horses and muleskinners. If that ain’t enough to raise your heckles, then throw in hair-raisin’ fiddling, hard-driving banjo and red-hot, foot-stompin’ rhythm. This is mean bluegrass!

The Mendip String Band with Kevin Brown

Mendip_String_Band__small.jpgBy way of complete contrast, The Mendip String Band, featuring Kevin Brown (slide guitar and lap-slide steel), Paul Godden (guitar), John Boston (fiddle and mandolin) and Bill Crampton (upright bass), offer a heady blend of Western-Swing, country boogie, and hot blues rags, plus emotive vocals from Kevin Brown himself.

They describe themselves as products of the Somerset Levels of yesteryear, when peat bogs and catastrophic crop failures and floods produced a unique kind of balladry reminiscent of those emerging from 19th century Texas and Oklahoma. The band’s repertoire is great to listen and dance to.
