American Season 2014

INTIMATE APPAREL by Lynn Nottage

Directed by Laurence Boswell

The Ustinov Studio’s American Season 2014 draws to a close later this month with the UK premiere of the multi award-winning Intimate Apparel, directed by the Ustinov’s Artistic Director, Laurence Boswell.

INTIMATE APPAREL is arguably the greatest play of one of America’s leading and most honoured playwrights. Set in 1905 New York, and brimming with wonderful characters, the play focusses on Esther, a black seamstress who sews exquisite lingerie for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. She has saved enough to allow her to dream of one day opening a beauty salon for black women, and at 35 years old, longs for a husband and a future. When she begins to receive beautiful letters from a lonesome Caribbean man who is working on the Panama Canal, it looks like life may be about to take a different course…

The cast includes Tanya Moodie as Esther, who most recently appeared opposite Lenny Henry in the much-acclaimed Theatre Royal Bath Production of Fences on tour and in the West End; Dawn Hope as Mrs Dickson, recently seen on television in Coronation Street, and on stage in the highly-acclaimed The Scottsboro Boys at the Young Vic, and Ilan Goodman who returns to the Ustinov Studio after starring in Red Light Winter in the American Season 2012. The cast is completed by Sara Topham (Gwendolyn in The Importance of Being Earnest for the Roundabout Theatre Company, New York), Chu Omambala (King Lear at the Chichester Festival Theatre) andRochelle Neil (Kitty in Chicago and Mrs. Weasel in Fantastic Mr. Fox at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre).

“A justly acclaimed, beautifully written and intensely personal play… with an ability to cut to the emotional quick with striking veracity” Chicago Tribune

Lynn Nottage was awarded the 2010 Distinguished Playwright Award and went on to win the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, Outer Critics’ Circle Award and John Gassner Award, all for Best Play, as well as the American Theater Critics Association’s Francesca Primus Award and the Steinberg New Play Award.
