The Theatre Royal Bath’s annual summer school, the Summer Company, is up and running at the egg, as the company of more than 50 young people and theatre professionals works to put on a full-scale production in just three weeks!
This summer’s production is VANITY FAIR, William Makepeace Thakeray’s classic Regency novel, which has been adapted from a 700 page serial epic to a 2 hour stage play by Declan Donnellan. Becky and Amelia are best friends who, having just finished school, are ready to dive into the glittering summer social scene. But whereas Amelia has money, family and admirers, Becky is just a poor orphan … but she isn’t going to let that stop her from living her dream life of wealth, luxury and pleasure. As fortunes shift and friendships fall apart, Becky manipulates and climbs her way to the highest level of society – but will her vanity come before a fall…? This is a rollercoaster ride through Thakeray’s biting and still pertinent satire of wannabes and social climbers, imagine Jane Austen meets Mean Girlswith all the fun of the fair!
The three-week project at the egg theatre offers young drama and technical students a unique opportunity to taste what life is like as a member of a professional theatre company. Whether developing acting skills or working backstage with the creative team, the Summer Company is a fantastic professional experience, as well as the chance to make new friends and undoubtedly create life-long memories.
The students are working with a professional director, choreographers, musicians and technicians to create a full-scale production for public performance. The cast members range in age from 12 – 18, with ten backstage participants. The Theatre Royal’s Summer Schools have become nationally renowned, having run for more than thirty years, and participants now come from across the South West, with some students travelling more than 90 miles in order to take part. TRB Theatre School’s Director is John East, whose previous Summer Company productions include The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
Rehearsals began on Monday and continue until 22 August, with performances from Thursday 23 – Sunday 26 August. Tickets are on sale now from the egg reception on 01225 823409, or online atwww.theatreroyal.org.uk
