THE HARVEST by Pavel Pryazhko

Translated by Sasha Dugdale; Directed by Michael Boyd

12th March – 11th April 2015

The Ustinov Studio’s World Theatre Season begins next month with the UK premiere of Pavel Pryazhko’s wickedly funny comedy, THE HARVEST, directed by Michael Boyd.

“This ambitious studio theatre punches above its weight”  The Times

It’s harvest time and Egor, Valerii, Ira and Lyuba are enjoying some hard graft in the orchard, picking apples and packing them into boxes. But, as the day progresses, what begin as tiny problems escalate into a complete shambles and total comic mayhem.

This is an ingenious comedy from Belarusian Pavel Pryazhko, who has been described as a ‘phenomenon’ of Russian New Writing, and regarded by the International Theatre Institute as “the author of perhaps the most devastatingly precise diagnosis of Post-Soviet society”. Pryazhko’s plays have been staged in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and all over Eastern Europe, and he has a cult following in Moscow.

Director Sir Michael Boyd is welcomed back to the Ustinov after the huge success of The Big Meal in the 2014 American Season. Michael Boyd was Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company from 2002-2012. During his time at the RSC his credits included Shakespeare’s eight-play History Cycle. He also developed the company’s record-breaking production of Matilda The Musical for Stratford, London and New York.

The cast includes Beth Park as Ira, who returns to the Ustinov Studio after starring alongside Alun Armstrong inExit The King last year. Playing Lyuba is Lindsey Campbell, working again with Sir Michael Boyd, having starred inThe Big Meal last year. The cast is completed by Royal Shakespeare Company actors Dyfan Dwyfor as Valerii and Dafydd Llyr Thomas as Egor.

2014 was the most successful year in the Ustinov Studio’s history – many productions  transferred to London and there were several sell-out productions. The Ustinov was one of only three venues shortlisted by The Stage as Regional Theatre of the Year, and was winner of the Bath Life Award for the Arts 2015.

The 2015 World Theatre Season also includes John Patrick Shanley’s OUTSIDE MULLINGAR (Thursday 16th April – Saturday 16th May) and Florian Zeller’s THE MOTHER (Thursday 21st May – Saturday 20th June)
