Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th February 2016
The Theatre Royal Bath’s TRB TheatreSchool present their play for this year’s National Theatre Connections Festival next month – Bedbug by Snoo Wilson, with music by Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp, and Guy Pratt of Pink Floyd.
The musical satire is based on a timely Russian black comedy, The Bedbug by Vladimir Mayakovsky. Ivan Varlet is making a class change. As he prepares to marry his bourgeois bride, the former mechanic casts off his socialist acquaintances and reinvents himself as ‘Ivor Violet’, before he can embark on his new life, however, a fire at the wedding kills all the guests and sees Ivan trapped in the ice cellar, frozen into a state of cryogenesis. Fifty years later, after the creation of a global socialist state following a world war, he is unfrozen into an unrecognisable Russia. But will he be Ivan or Ivor…?
Bedbug was originally adapted in 2004 for the NT Connections Festival, an annual celebration of new writing for young people, launched by the National Theatre and now in its 21st year. The cast of 22 young people aged between 13 & 16 present the satirical musical at the egg next month, before returning for the Festival proper in April, when they will be appearing alongside 12 other local groups and schools in a week-long celebration of young people’s theatre, with over 500 groups participating nationwide.
BEDBUG is at the egg theatre on Saturday 6th February at 7.30pm and Sunday 7th February at 1pm. Tickets priced at £8.50 / £7.50 children can be booked through the Box Office on 01225 448844, the egg reception on 01225 823409 or online at www.theatreroyal.org.uk (booking fees apply)
NATIONAL THEATRE CONNECTIONS takes place across the country from Tuesday 26th April – Sunday 1st May. Schools and groups appearing at the egg theatre include TRB TheatreSchool, Teenage Rampage, King Edward’s School, St. Gregory’s School and Scrum Down Theatre Company. Further details will be announced later in the year.
